Adult Sleep Solutions

Sleep-disordered breathing can disrupt a good night’s sleep. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and snoring are two common examples.

It can be hard to diagnose these conditions as they occur while a person is sleeping. But a patient needs to be made aware as early as possible to fix the issue.

Sleep is crucial for the body to function properly. Lack of sleep can take a toll on a person’s physical, mental, and emotional health.

Wing Dental can resolve your sleep-disordered breathing symptoms. Your dentist can screen you for snoring and OSA and recommend treatment options.

Treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

OSA causes repeated pauses in your breathing during sleep. It’s the most common type of sleep apnea. It occurs when the throat muscles overrelax and block your airways during sleep. Snoring is one symptom of OSA.

Here are some OSA treatments:

  • Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. It uses a machine to help a patient breathe more easily during sleep. The patient wears a mask, while the machine delivers pressurized air in the throat to keep airways open.
  • Surgery. Another option to treat OSA is surgery. Parts of the throat or the tonsil may be removed. Patients may consider this if other treatments aren’t effective in treating their sleep apnea symptoms.
  • Oral appliance therapy (OAT). Using removable oral devices can prevent the airway from collapsing during sleep. The device fits similarly to a mouthguard. It’s custom-fitted to ensure effectiveness and patient comfort. Our dentist can determine if you’re a suitable candidate for OAT.

Advantages of OAT

  • Custom-made for every patient. It’s superior to the ready-to-wear options you’ll find in pharmacies or stores.
  • Suitable for patients who prefer minimally-invasive treatment options.
  • Beneficial for patients who are not comfortable with CPAP machines.
  • Doesn’t require wires and cords so it’s portable.
  • Effective in reducing snoring and alleviating sleep-disordered breathing.
  • Helps patients enjoy full sleep and feel more rested throughout the day.

How OAT Works

  1. We review your medical history and discuss your symptoms.
  1. We perform an oral examination to identify signs of snoring or sleep apnea.
  1. We refer you to a specialist or collaborate with your doctors for further examinations.
  1. Once we receive diagnosis and recommendations from a specialist, we proceed to make your custom oral appliance.
  1. We schedule you for fitting once your oral appliance is ready.
  1. The oral appliance positions your jaw forward to hold the tongue in place and keep your airways open during sleep.
  1. Over time, we may need to adjust the appliance. We continue to monitor your progress and examine your airways as we go along to ensure proper function.
